So I've been playing this game, Cities: Skylines, and it's reminded me of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! AOTD, and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! QOTD. You see, this game is about much more than just building your standard grid-shaped city, it's all about building interchanges, overpasses, and all those sexy concrete spaghetti noodles that keep traffic flowing efficiently.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
You've got all the in-depth city building tools you'd expect, like utilities, zoning, taxes, and recreational marijuana, but start building a city without planning out your roads, and before long you're going to be staring at LONG lines of angry motorists, not to mention buildings overflowing with garbage and the recently (or not so recently) deceased, because the garbage trucks and hearses can't reach them.
It's a satisfying experience laying down the groundwork and watching a small town, and eventually a full sized city grow on top of it. That satisfaction is punctuated every so often with !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , keeping you busy (and broke), for hours. Your tiny citizens, each and every one of which are walking and driving around your city in real-time, need the essentials: homes, jobs, water, electricity, protection, healthcare, a place for their trash, and eventually, a place for their tiny digital corpses. Providing all these things is difficult enough, connecting them all together so your city works in a cohesive manner? That's what makes the game so much fun. If you think you'd like to try it, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! to get a taste of what the best city building game in years is all about.
One of the best parts of Cities: Skylines, is the Steam Workshop. If you're in a pinch or just find that you suck at making interchanges, there are TONS of them ready-made, and waiting for you on the workshop. Interchanges don't even begin to scratch the surface though; the workshop is absolutely LOADED with custom buildings and maps as well. Using the awesome tool, terrain.party , you can even import an exact replica of your own home town. Using another mod will even allow you to place down either all or some of the roads exactly where they'd be in real life!
So, does anyone else on Jalopnik have this game? What have you made so far?

I like it and was a bit bamboozled about all the people bitching about traffic issues. Maybe its because I'm British and jam in as many people as I can via a convoluted road network as opposed to the Grid system I see most people use.

I have this game but always seem to get sucky traffic jams from the motorway piling up into my city, this is my first time really giving this type of game a go so really stuck with how to improve on my traffic

Looking GREAT. Love the connection to the highway.

I'm guessing you started with two highways poking off the main highway into your starting square. That can be a tough one to connect initially before your city gets built up.
I'd recommend making a roundabout to start with, but remember to plan for later, literally, down the road, when you unlock bigger roads so you can extend it to connect other parts of your city.
I'll do a video with some suggestions soon.

that'd be much appreciated, I normally place a single road somewhere random so I can then use the biggest type of road at the start then go into a roundabout but somehow they seem to get chock full of traffic

Rather than connect to an intersection, the on/off ramps loop together and make a roundabout of sorts. It keeps ramp traffic from stopping and backing up too far.

I still haven't had time to really give Cities a go - playing other stuff - but when I do, I plan to avoid four-way intersections as much as I possibly can. There's only one major one in my entire town, and I hate the bloody thing.

Roundabouts are so essential until they go wrong which they do a lot.

Yeah, watching Let's Plays, I get the impression that actual, real civil engineers might well be some of the smartest people on the planet.
